About Us

Explorer Post 1952 offers young people (ages 14-21) an opportunity to not only learn about law enforcement, but also serve their community. Explorers participate in many community related events such as National Night Out and occasional fingerprinting booths at certain times around the county. Explorers may dress up as McGruff the Crime Dog or the Crash Dummies at these events.

In addition to community service, explorers are trained in various techniques used by law enforcement professionals. Some of the areas explorers are trained in are traffic stops, building searches, bomb threat response, hostage negotiation, and accident reconstruction. Post 1952 travels to regional and national events to compete against other explorer posts in various scenarios. Explorers learn a great amount of what police officers need to know to fulfill their duties.

Police explorers learn a great deal about the Howard County Police Department. Explorers are familiar with police radio procedures, patrol areas, vehicles,  equipment, and methods of patrol. Through the department's ride along program, explorers get to ride with a patrol officer and experience life through the eyes of an officer. Regular Howard County citizens are permitted to ride along once every 6 months while a trained explorer is allowed up to 12 hours of ride along time every month.
